Racking Up Vertical For the Snow Leopards

| January 14, 2014

Dynafit, in conjunction with the Sports Loft and Alta, are hosting a “Snow Leopard Day – Ski Touring Event” this Saturday, Jan 18th at Alta.  It is a five hour event which will be held in the Michigan City area of upper Grizzly Gulch and features go-til-you-blow laps, with Dynafit donating 5 cents for each meter climbed, per person, to the Snow Leopard Trust.

If you register right now, you will get a t-shirt, $10 towards a lunch at Alta and a $20 discount on an Alta ticket.  The price is $25 total (no lift ticket required) and registration can be done on line at http://www.thesportloft.com/snowleopard.html, or by calling The Sports Loft at (801)272-3701.  You can also register the day of the event for the same price, but you don’t get the shirt, lunch and discount ticket.

This should be a fun event and if you ever raced in the early PowderKegs, you’ll feel right at home as this is where the bulk of them took place.  The general plan is to park in the Grizzly Gulch parking lot (all the way at the top of the LCC road on the left) then walk down to a Dynafit tent which will be located near the Alta Cat House (that big maintenance building where they work on the snowcats). The event starts at 8:00, so you’ll want to get there before that, especially if you are registering the day of.  From here, we’ll climb up the summer road to Michigan City, then do laps until 1:00pm.

The course is subject to change depending on the weather and avalanche conditions, but the event will go on one way or another.  The ascents will be suitable for all abilities (no keeper-steeper killer skinners) and it is only a blood sport if you want to make it so.  But, if that’s the case, please come blow chunks for the kitty!

See you there.

Not only have I skied a lot of your lines, I’ve read many of them, too. This post contains one of your best ones! In case you’re not sure which one it is, I’ll give you three guesses: 1) If you register right now… 2) This should be a fun event, or 3) come blow chunks for the kitty! Clearly, the years have taken nothing away from your ability to send it from the top, with feeling. Nice work!

5 cents per METER? What’s with the metric? Unless they are paying out in euros, I’ll stick to measuring my vert in feet.

  3. Dirk – I know what you mean and think that whole metric thing is just a passing fad. Just to make the math easier, they are donating 0.0152392563242914 cents per proud American vertical foot.

  4. A OK – I’m going with the oxymoron of “this should be a fun event” as no endurance sport is actually fun in the true sense of the word. :)

collective misery (aka event bonding) builds strong bodies and weak minds.

Initially meant to correct the 0.0152392563242914 cents per foot above to 1.52392563242914 cents per proud American vertical foot but upon looking into it it’s actually 5 cents per proud American vertical foot ($0.05/ft) according to the Sports Loft website and the Dynafit rep.

  7. Do you carry the decimal point with metric conversions? I always get so confused, but 5 cents a foot sounds pretty good – actually almost too good, considering how many people are signed up for it and how much vertical many of them are capable of doing.
