Photo Gallery – 2002 Baffin Island
I’m slowly organizing my photo galleries and just got around to adding one of my all time favorite trips to StraightChuter.com – Baffin Island 2002. This was a great trip in a lot of ways. For one, we had no idea what to expect for skiing, and it turned out to be some of the best couloirs ever. We were also experiementing with kites (theme of the moment) and they worked out perfectly. Plus, I had a great time with Brad, the scenery blew me away and it was a special treat/honor to meet the Inuits, both in Clyde River and out on The Land.

I really love this shot:

Coolest camp ever.
We ended up spending two nights there even though we were worried about getting stuffed when/if an avalanche came down the chute (I think the chute was the Model T couloir..?). In the end, the most dangerous part was when Brad almost got clocked by icefall from the berg itself by camping too close to the wall.
That trip was the BEST trip I have ever been on. I remember huge amounts of preparation sewing kites, building sleds, researching food, making gear that would protect us from the bitter cold…. all for “maybe” some good skiing and “maybe” some wind to kite.
Almost a month of a first decent a day and hanging with Andrew. Living simply on preplanned meals we carried. A fond memory is when Andrew found my stash of Swedish fish and honey. It was either throw them out or eat them – I remember doing a 32oz bag and a whole “bear” of honey in 24hrs. Nowdays that would put me in a coma.
Thanks again Andrew!
Hi Brad – that was the Gold Standard with which all trips must be measured!
I still think one of my favorite moments was when you explained that chocolate didn’t count as candy… it was, well, chocolate. :)
Yep, different food group entirely. Similarly, coffee doesn’t count as a beverage. It’s coffee.
