FUAC Party of the Year – Thursday

| September 15, 2009

The Black Diamond/Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center (FUAC) party is by far and away my favorite party the year and is the unofficial start to the 2009/10 ski season.  This is the 16th Annual holding of the gala and over the years it has played a big part in helping to fund the UAC.  The event is held outdoors in the Black Diamond parking lot and is organized by Colleen Nipkow who knows how to kick ass, take names and throw monster parties.  It is always a great occasion and fun to see all the skiers crawl out from under their summer shade umbrellas and start to think about snow again.

The party is on Thursday, Sept 17th and features live music, food, a silent auction with TONS of great items, a raffle and beer, wine or softdrinks.  You get a chance to meet the UAC forecasters, and as an added bonus, the guys/girls serving the beer are often in Customer Service at BD, so you can bust their chops with all of your BD product complaints.  Why don’t you make a 35cm ice screw?  How about a woman’s Megawatt in a 159?  Why do your shorts only come in black and pinch my thighs?  I was just skiing around (JSA) on a flat groomer and my skis exploded! They love it.

The party starts at 6:00pm rain, shine or snow and goes until the police shut it down, which in Utah means 9:59pm and 59 seconds.  A big change this year is that dogs will not be allowed (this doesn’t include the Wasatch PowderBird Guides), which is probably a good thing as one of the first years my dog ran around cleaning up plates of spicy Tibetan food and then yakked it up on the carpet for most of the night.

A $35 donation is requested at the door and more information can be found here.

I hope to see you there.
